How to become a pilot

The credential is called a Remote Pilot Licence (RePL), issued to an individual and valid for life once earned. Pilots train through a CASA-approved RPAS Training Organisation, which covers the required theory and practical assessment; pilots who already hold a Part 61 pilot licence can have some common theory components waived. A business operating drones for commercial clients typically also needs a Remote Operator's Certificate (ReOC), issued to a person or a company, which requires an approved operations manual and CASA review, unless the business flies under another operator's ReOC.

Flying in controlled airspace requires an additional Aeronautical Radio Operator Certificate.

About the regulation

Civil drone operation in Australia is regulated by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) under a tiered weight and risk framework. Drones under 2 kilograms flown for commercial purposes fall into an excluded category that needs no formal licence, just operator accreditation (for pilots 16 and older, with adult supervision required under 16) and drone registration. Heavier commercial operations generally need a Remote Pilot Licence, earned through a CASA-approved training organisation.

A business flying for others typically also needs its own Remote Operator's Certificate, unless it operates under someone else's certificate. Every drone over 250 grams must be registered through myCASA regardless of use, and any drone flown for business is registered regardless of weight.

Confirm current requirements on the authority's official site before you enroll or fly.
