How to become a pilot

The credential is called the Remote Pilot Certificate, though the original 2021 rule text used the term Remote Pilot Licence; both refer to the same credential. Applicants must be 18 to 65 years old, have passed the 10th grade, and complete training at a DGCA-authorized Remote Pilot Training Organisation, roughly 5 to 7 days covering 20 hours of theory and 20 hours of practical flying, followed by a competency exam administered by the training organisation under DGCA standards.

The certificate is valid for 10 years. The government fee itself is modest, around 100 to 1,000 rupees depending on the exact filing, though the training course itself is priced separately by each school, typically 30,000 to 75,000 rupees.

About the regulation

Civil drone operation in India is regulated by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), with individual records tracked through the Digital Sky platform, under the Drones Rules 2021 and its 2022 amendment. Drones are sorted into five weight classes, from Nano (under 250 grams) up to Large (over 150 kilograms), with a Unique Identification Number required for all but Nano drones.

Nano drones and non-commercial Micro drones are exempt from the certification requirement entirely.

Confirm current requirements on the authority's official site before you enroll or fly.
