How to become a pilot

The credential is called the Remote Pilot Certificate of Competency (RCoC), with a Basic tier (RCoC-B) plus add-on modules for agricultural and extended-visual-line-of-sight flying. The minimum age is 18 for the Basic certificate and its modules, or 16 for the lighter A2 tier.

Training runs through one of only six CAAM-approved training organisations, ending in a written exam of roughly 60 questions over 90 minutes. CAAM does not charge a fee for the certificate itself; the training organisation sets its own course price.

About the regulation

Civil drone operation in Malaysia is regulated by the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) under the Civil Aviation Regulations 2016 and CAD 6011, most recently amended in November 2025. Operations are sorted into four approval types depending on the activity: a Standard Air Traffic Fundamentals approval for low-risk visual-line-of-sight flying, a Certificate of Airworthiness tied to training-organisation status, an approval for agricultural use, and a Specific Use Permit for beyond-visual-line-of-sight or higher-risk operations.
