How to become a pilot

Certification requirements depend on both the drone's weight and who owns it: institutional owners need a certificate for any drone at all, while individual owners only need one once a drone reaches 2 kilograms with an autopilot, or 15 kilograms regardless of equipment. There are three certificate tiers, each valid for three years and renewable: a Learning Certificate for ages 14 and up (supervised flying under 25 kilograms), a General Certificate for ages 18 and up (a written exam, for personal drones of 2 to 15 kilograms with navigation systems), and a Professional Certificate for ages 18 and up (written and practical exams plus a medical check, required for institutional aircraft or personal drones of 15 kilograms or more).

About the regulation

Civil drone operation in Taiwan is regulated by the Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA) under the Regulations on the Management of Remote-Controlled Unmanned Aircraft, effective March 2020. Individually owned drones of 250 grams or more must register, valid for two years; drones owned by government bodies, schools, or companies must register regardless of weight, and drones of 25 kilograms or more require an inspection.

Confirm current requirements on the authority's official site before you enroll or fly.
