How to become a pilot

The credential is called a Remote Pilot Certificate, with an Open-category version (RPC-O) and a Specific-category version (RPC-S). Applicants must be 18 or older, pass a security background check, and be able to read, speak, and understand English. The process includes a 60-question theory exam with a 75 percent pass mark, taken online for the Open category or in person for the Specific category, plus a practical skills assessment for the Specific category by a GACA-appointed examiner.

No fee is published for the individual certificate itself.

About the regulation

Civil drone operation in Saudi Arabia is regulated by the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) under GACAR Part 107. Registration is required if a drone weighs 250 grams or more, or carries any personal-data or survey sensor, meaning even a sub-250-gram drone with a camera must register. Operations fall into an Open category (under 25 kilograms, visual line of sight, daytime, at least 30 meters from uninvolved people, and away from restricted areas) or a Specific category (25 to 150 kilograms, or any operation outside the Open category's limits, such as night flying or flying over people).

Confirm current requirements on the authority's official site before you enroll or fly.

This page is for general orientation and may not reflect the latest regulatory changes. It is not legal advice: confirm current rules, fees, and permitted zones with your country's civil aviation authority before you fly.
