How to become a pilot

The A1/A3 category, called the Kompetenznachweis, requires a 20 franc online exam, with a minimum age of 12. The A2 category, called the Fernpilotenzeugnis, also costs 20 francs but requires an in-person proctored exam, with practical skills self-studied against BAZL checklists.

All renewals cost a flat 20 francs regardless of how many certificates a pilot holds.

About the regulation

Civil drone operation in Switzerland is regulated by the Federal Office of Civil Aviation (BAZL/FOCA/OFAC) under EU Regulation 2019/947, incorporated through a 1999 bilateral air transport agreement with the EU rather than EEA membership like Norway. Registration costs a flat 10 Swiss francs through the dLIS portal and has unlimited validity across all EASA states.

Confirm current requirements on the authority's official site before you enroll or fly.

This page is for general orientation and may not reflect the latest regulatory changes. It is not legal advice: confirm current rules, fees, and permitted zones with your country's civil aviation authority before you fly.
