How to become a pilot

After registering as a UAS operator, pilots complete free training and a 40-question exam covering 9 subjects, with a 75 percent pass threshold, through the same lba-openuav.de portal, resulting in the EU-Kompetenznachweis A1/A3 for 25 euros, valid 5 years. Flying closer to people requires an additional exam at an LBA-approved test center for the EU-Fernpilotenzeugnis A2, for 30 euros.

Specific-category or STS flying requires the EU-Fernpilotenzeugnis STS, also 30 euros, combining theory and a practical assessment.

About the regulation

Civil drone operation in Germany is regulated by the Luftfahrt-Bundesamt (LBA) under EU Regulation 2019/947 plus national rules in the LuftVO and LuftVG. Operators must register through the uas-registration.lba-openuav.de portal, for a fee of 20 euros for individuals or 50 euros for organizations.
