How to become a pilot

The A1/A3 category requires free training and an unlimited-attempt 30-question exam through the DGAC's own formation-telepilote portal, resulting in a certificate of exam completion valid 5 years. The A2 category requires an additional 30-question exam through AlphaTango, with a 75 percent pass threshold, for 30 euros, resulting in the Brevet d'Aptitude de Pilote à Distance (BAPD).

As of January 2026, the Specific-category credential changed: the older CATT certificate was replaced by CATS, a 60-question exam at DGAC OCEANE testing centers, alongside an STS-01/02 declaration.

About the regulation

Civil drone operation in France is regulated by the Direction Générale de l'Aviation Civile (DGAC) under EU Regulation 2019/947 plus two implementing orders from December 2020. Operators register for free through the AlphaTango portal, receiving an operator number starting with FRA.
