How to become a pilot

Every pilot needs a Flyer ID, a free online competency test, plus an Operator ID for whoever is responsible for the drone, costing £12.34 a year for anyone 18 or older. Flying closer to people requires an A2 Certificate of Competency, earned through an RAE-PC training provider with a self-directed practical component and a 30-question theory exam.

Commercial or Specific-category flying currently needs a General VLOS Certificate, though this is being phased out in favor of a tiered Remote Pilot Certificate (RPC-L1/L2/L3) by the end of 2027, obtained through an RAE-PC provider plus a CAA Operational Authorisation.

About the regulation

Civil drone operation in the United Kingdom is regulated by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) under the Air Navigation Order 2016 and the UK's own onshored version of EU Regulation 2019/947, following Brexit. The UK kept the same Open, Specific, and Certified category structure as the EU model, but now runs it as its own independent regime.

Confirm current requirements on the authority's official site before you enroll or fly.

This page is for general orientation and may not reflect the latest regulatory changes. It is not legal advice: confirm current rules, fees, and permitted zones with your country's civil aviation authority before you fly.
