How to become a pilot

Chile's DGAC issues a remote-pilot credential, the credencial de piloto a distancia. You must be at least 18, file a sworn declaration that you received theoretical and practical instruction on the specific drone model, and pass a written exam covering the DAN 151 and DAN 91 rules, NOTAMs, meteorology, and aerodynamics with a minimum of 75 percent.

There is no medical exam; a sworn statement takes its place. Apply and pay the fee online through the DGAC's SIPA system, and the credential is valid for three years. Recreational drones under 750 grams flown in private areas need no credential.

About the regulation

Drone operations in Chile are governed by the DGAC (Dirección General de Aeronáutica Civil), principally through norm DAN 151. To fly over populated areas an operator needs a remote pilot credential: applicants must be at least 18, submit a notarized sworn statement of instruction on the specific RPAS model, and pass a written exam covering DAN 151, DAN 91, meteorology and aerodynamics with a minimum score of 75%.

The drone must be registered with the DGAC, and each operation requires visual contact with the aircraft plus third-party liability insurance.

Confirm current requirements on the authority's official site before you enroll or fly.
