How to become a pilot

Colombia's Aerocivil issues the UAS pilot competency certificate, the Certificado de Idoneidad de Piloto UAS, under RAC 100. You complete an approved UAS pilot course, hold a valid occupational medical certificate, and pass Aerocivil's in-person theory exam for UAS pilots; the certificate is not issued to minors.

Practical skill is certified inside the approved course. Apply through Aerocivil's UAS platform with your ID, the course certificate, proof of the exam, and the medical.

About the regulation

Colombia's civil aviation authority, the Unidad Administrativa Especial de Aeronáutica Civil (Aerocivil / UAEAC), regulates drones under RAC 100, adopted by Resolution 01983 of September 27, 2023. The rule sorts operations into three categories by weight and risk: abierta (open), específica (specific), and certificada (certified).

In the specific and certified categories, pilots must hold a UAS competency certificate (Certificado de Idoneidad) issued by the UAEAC, and operators must obtain a UAS operator certificate and register their systems; the pilot-competency requirement took effect June 27, 2024.

Confirm current requirements on the authority's official site before you enroll or fly.

This page is for general orientation and may not reflect the latest regulatory changes. It is not legal advice: confirm current rules, fees, and permitted zones with your country's civil aviation authority before you fly.
