How to become a pilot

Ecuador sorts drone flying into three categories under RDAC 101. In the open category, for lighter recreational flying, there is no license: the remote pilot must be at least 14, flown under adult supervision, and have reviewed the DGAC's basic induction material. Commercial and higher-risk flying falls in the specific category, which needs a remote-pilot authorization: you must be at least 18, complete a course at a DGAC-certified UAS instruction organization, and pass the DGAC's theory exam across ten subjects with a minimum of 75 percent.

The authorization is valid for two years and renewed by re-examination.

About the regulation

Ecuador's Dirección General de Aviación Civil (DGAC) regulates unmanned aircraft under RDAC 101, which applies to systems up to 250 kg maximum takeoff mass. Any aircraft over 250 g must be registered with the DGAC, and operations are split into two categories: Abierta (Open) for lower-risk flights and Específica (Specific) for higher-risk and commercial operations requiring prior authorization.

Remote pilots in the certified categories must hold a remote-pilot authorization issued by the DGAC and complete theoretical and practical training.

Confirm current requirements on the authority's official site before you enroll or fly.
